SICKLE CELL DISEASE AND INFLUENZA 2008

Dear Colleagues and Friends and Concerned Citizens:

Please see the excerpt from our committee information below regarding the Press Conference scheduled for Friday, September 7, 2007 @ 2:30PM in the City Hall Atrium. Nurses Darlene Hoffner and Rhonda Collins along with Director of Public Health, Tim Callahan will be there to lead this awareness effort along with family and friends of those affected by this very serious disease.

Please come out and show your support for the cause of Sickle Cell Disease Awareness, Screening & Continued Research for a Cure. The Mayor will read a proclamation as September every year is Sickle Cell Awareness Month - two brave victims will be recognized at that time (see details below). If you plan to attend, please ~click here and let me know~.

Thanks in advance for your support, concern and assistance and making Sickle Cell Awareness Month more visible to ensure better awareness and wellness for those affected directly or indirectly by this disease. God Bless.

Sickle Cell Disease: September 2007

On Thursday, September 13, 2007, a screening event/rally will be held at the South Norwalk Community Center between the hours of 9:30am and 11:30am. This event is a collaborative effort of the Norwalk Department of Health, the Sickle Cell Disease Association, and the Norwalk Community Health Center. Rev. Phyllis Bolden has participated with the planning efforts.

The event will offer educational and screening opportunities targeted at residents of the South Norwalk community, particularly because sickle cell disease affects one in every 375 African-Americans and one in every 1000 Hispanics. Sickle cell anemia affects millions of people worldwide. It’s most common in people whose families come from Africa, South or Central America, the Caribbean islands, Mediterranean countries (such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy), India, and Saudi Arabia. Because so many are affected, all are welcome to attend.

A press conference is scheduled for Friday, September 7, 2007 at 2:30pm. It will be held in the Atrium of City Hall. At the press conference the Mayor will read a proclamation recognizing September as National Sickle Cell Awareness Month and will also announce the upcoming September 13th event. Two young Norwalk residents who succumbed to the disease, Briana Shantel Massey and Chrystal Lynne Mann, will be recognized at this time. Individuals diagnosed with Sickle Cell disease and their families have been invited to attend the reading of the proclamation.

Influenza 2008

Flu season is fast approaching and the Health Department is planning its community clinics. Because we would like to see the members of the African American and Hispanic community access the flu vaccine more, we are considering other creative ways to make the vaccine available.

This year we intend to collaborate with the Norwalk Fire Department by utilizing their mobile fire safety unit to bring the flu vaccine directly to identified locations in the South Norwalk community. By working with those within the churches, housing complexes, and neighborhood groups we hope to generate interest and excitement in this event. We may advertise our collaborative effort as "FluFighters".

The plan is to visit a few chosen neighborhood locations or housing complexes for a period of about two hours at each site. In addition to the flu vaccine being available, the Fire Department representatives will be available to educate about and demonstrate fire safety. They will distribute information and other fun giveaways. We look forward to this activity and hope that it will result in increased protection for everyone.
